39 PEOPLE DIED AFTER DRINKING TOXIC LIQUOR ON CHRISTMAS DAY

- At least 39 people have died after drinking toxic alcohol in Pakistan

- 150 others were hospitalized on Christmas day following the incident

- The person who arranged the drink was also among the dead

It was a sad Christmas day in Pakistan as 39 Christians celebrating Christmas died and about 150 were hospitalized after they drank toxic liquor.

According to reports, the police subsequently arrested all the alcohol sellers in the district of Toba Tek Singh, where the incident happened and is currently questioning them.

According to Aljazeera the alcohol was drunk during the Christmas celebrations in a Christian community, however five Muslims were also among the dead.

Muhammad Shahbaz, a local police official also revealed that many of the victims had been drinking and dancing throughout Sunday, December 25, and into Monday morning, when some of them started feeling the ill effects and were taken to hospital.

He also said that already, funerals have been held for 25 of the victims, and the individual who allegedly arranged the drinks was among the dead, which was hindering the investigation.

It was also revealed that deaths caused by toxic alcohol was not rare among the minorities. Meanwhile, it was a sad day in Ibara housing estate of Abeokuta, Ogun state. After drinking the local liquor, popularly called Ogogoro or illicit gin, four people reportedly died.
